There are some productions at the Fringe that immediately feel bigger than the room they are playing in, and Acid’s Reign is certainly one of them. This is an ambitious, visually impressive and incredibly polished piece of musical theatre that delivers on almost every level.
From the moment the show begins, there is a confidence to the production. It knows exactly what kind of world it wants to create and commits to it completely, resulting in a show that feels remarkably large in scale for the Fringe.
At the centre of it all is an excellent cast, who throw themselves into the production with an infectious amount of energy. There isn’t a weak link amongst them, with each performer bringing their own personality to the piece while working brilliantly as an ensemble.
Vocally, the production is particularly strong. The bigger musical numbers are delivered with real power, while the cast are equally capable of pulling things back when the story calls for something more intimate. The chemistry between them is excellent and plays a huge part in making the relationships at the centre of the story work.
There is plenty of humour throughout, but beneath the fun there is also important issues being explored. The show has plenty to say about climate activism, friendship, identity and the compromises that can come when success begins to clash with what you originally stood for.
It could easily become overwhelmed by everything it is trying to do, but the production manages to keep its story at the centre while still allowing itself to be big, colourful and unapologetically theatrical.
Acid’s Reign is an all-round incredibly strong production. A brilliant cast and impressive musical performances combine to create something genuinely special.
Acid’s Reign plays at Forth at Pleasance Court until 31st August.
