Sometimes at the Fringe, all you really need is someone very funny with a microphone, and Kate Butch proves exactly that.

A Kate in the Hand is Worth Two in the Butch is an absolutely hilarious hour of comedy that had me laughing from beginning to end.

The show is loosely built around proverbs, but really this gives Kate Butch the perfect excuse to jump between stories, observations and some brilliant tangents. There is a real feeling that you never quite know where the next story is going, but you know there will be a punchline waiting when you get there.

Kate is an incredibly natural performer. There is an ease to the way they command the room that makes the whole thing feel effortless.

There is also plenty of interaction with the crowd, and this was another highlight. Kate is incredibly quick when responding to people and manages to have fun with the audience without ever letting it take over the show.

The material itself ranges from laugh-out-loud jokes to much more personal moments. Kate talks openly about their own experiences and some of the less pleasant sides of being a visible queer performer, but the show never feels like it has become something completely different. These softer moments sit very naturally alongside the comedy and give the hour a little more substance without losing what makes it so much fun.

And then there is the pettiness.

Some of the funniest moments come when Kate is talking about grudges, revenge and the lengths they are prepared to go to prove a point.

There is no need for anything overly elaborate here because the strength of this show is entirely in the material and the person delivering it.

Kate Butch is sharp, naturally funny and completely at home in front of an audience. A Kate in the Hand is Worth Two in the Butch is an hour of properly funny stand-up and easily one of the biggest laughs I’ve had at the Fringe this year.

KATE BUTCH - A Kate in the Hand is Worth Two in the Butch plays at King Dome at Pleasance Dome until 30th August.
